How Many Prophets Are There in Islam?

The Quran names 25 prophets. Eighteen of them are listed together in Surah Al-An’am (6:83-86), and the others are named in different surahs. There were many more prophets than these. Allah says that He has told us the stories of some messengers and not of others (Surah Ghafir, 40:78), and that a messenger was sent to every nation (Surah An-Nahl, 16:36).

The number 124,000 is often quoted. It comes from a hadith reported in Musnad Ahmad, and scholars differ about its authenticity, so the exact number is known only to Allah.

The First and the Last Prophet in Islam

The first prophet is Adam (alayhis salam), the first human being. The last prophet is Muhammad ﷺ. The Quran calls him the Seal of the Prophets (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:40), and no prophet will come after him.

The Five Greatest Prophets (Ulul Azm)

Five messengers are known as Ulul Azm, the messengers of strong resolve. They are mentioned together in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:7) and Surah Ash-Shura (42:13):

  1. Nuh (alayhis salam)
  2. Ibrahim (alayhis salam)
  3. Musa (alayhis salam)
  4. Isa (alayhis salam)
  5. Muhammad ﷺ

Difference Between a Nabi and a Rasul

A nabi (prophet) is a man chosen by Allah to receive revelation. A rasul (messenger) is a prophet who was sent with a message to deliver to a people. Every rasul is a nabi, but not every nabi is a rasul. Scholars have explained the exact difference in more than one way.
