Shab e Qadr Ki Dua in Hadith

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet ﷺ: O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is Laylatul Qadr, what should I say on it? He replied: say, “Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.” (Jami at-Tirmidhi: 3513, graded sahih; Sunan Ibn Majah: 3850)

Some narrations add the word كَرِيمٌ (Karim) after ‘afuwwun. Scholars of hadith have noted that this addition is not in the main chains of the hadith, so the version above without it is the more established wording. Reciting it with Karim is also widespread and there is no harm in it.

What Is Shab e Qadr (Laylatul Qadr)?

Shab e Qadr, the Night of Power or the Night of Decree, is the night in which the Quran was first sent down. Allah says that this night is better than a thousand months (Surah Al-Qadr, 97:3), which is more than 83 years. Worship on this one night carries more reward than worship on a thousand months.

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever stands in prayer on Laylatul Qadr with faith and hope of reward, his past sins are forgiven. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 1901; Sahih Muslim: 760)

When Is Shab e Qadr?

The exact night has not been told to us. The Prophet ﷺ said to seek it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan (Sahih al-Bukhari: 2017), that is, the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th nights. The 27th night is the most widely observed in India and Pakistan, and many companions held it to be the most likely, but it is not certain. The safest practice is to worship on all five odd nights, or on all ten.

What to Do on Shab e Qadr

  1. Pray Isha and Fajr in congregation. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever prays Isha in congregation has stood half the night, and whoever also prays Fajr in congregation has stood the whole night. (Sahih Muslim: 656)
  2. Recite the shab e qadr ki dua often, in sujood, between prayers and while walking.
  3. Pray nafl and tahajjud. Even a few rakats with full attention are better than many in a hurry.
  4. Recite the Quran, especially Surah Al-Qadr, and read its translation.
  5. Make istighfar and personal dua for yourself, your parents and the Ummah.
  6. Give sadaqah. Charity on this night is multiplied like every other good deed.
  7. Stay away from sin and idle talk, so the night is not wasted.

Signs of Shab e Qadr

The hadith mention that the night is calm and mild, neither hot nor cold, and that the sun rises the next morning without strong rays. (Sahih Muslim: 762; Musnad Ahmad) These signs are known only afterwards, so they cannot be used to pick the night in advance.

Other Duas for Shab e Qadr

Along with the main dua, these short duas from the Quran are often recited:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Roman English: Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘azaban-nar.

Translation: Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:201)

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Roman English: Rabbighfir warham wa anta khayrur-rahimin.

Translation: My Lord, forgive and have mercy, for You are the best of those who show mercy. (Surah Al-Mu’minun, 23:118)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Shab e Qadr and Shab e Barat?

Shab e Barat is the 15th night of Shaban, the month before Ramadan. Shab e Qadr is in the last ten nights of Ramadan and is the night the Quran was revealed. The Quran itself speaks of Shab e Qadr; Shab e Barat is observed on the basis of hadith.
